Self Destruction

Here's one example I came across today, but there's many other examples out there....

Why does self-destruction relieve stress so well?

It's change. Change is good, even when it hurts...especially when it hurts.

In fact we pay doctors to hurt us to the point where we become motivated to heal ourselves.

I'm not so sure I buy this answer because not every kind of change relieves stress.

Another thought is that ego likes self destruction because sometimes that is the only way to exert control over a situation. For example, even if your hands are tied you can still beat your head into unconciousness. Interestingly, at the same time it is punishment for "needing" control over the situation.

Just brainstorming.

Sometimes the change that is being manifested requires a greater 'letting go' than what even a well-trained ego is willing to allow (we are ever upgrading the little fellow). It is in these times that stress must increase to bring that ego back to the reality that it is not the driver of the train, but the projector of the movie. In fact, there IS no train.

Sounds likely to me. Remember that the control is illusory, and punishment is self-inflicted (by the ego, since Ø does not punish), and I think you'll start to see through the smokescreen.

I just had a conversation that provided some more insight into this.

Stress creates negative energy. That energy must be transmuted in some way in order to relieve the tension in one's body. Ideally parents teach their children when they are young to transmute that energy in healthy, non-destructive ways. Sometimes people learn to transmute that energy through self destruction. Children are more likely to learn self-destructive stress relief if their parents react to a child's negative emotions with anger.
