Success in going 'furthur', sort of

It's long been my desire to learn the 'beingness' of different states of awareness. Especially the states induced by, say, mushrooms or LSD or mescaline. Of course, 'learning' implies experiencing, over and over. I feel like I may have made a step in that direction, having just this evening self-induced a trance state with geometric visual patterns. However, it appears that the sense of the presence of an 'other' is missing. That would of course logically follow, but I am surprised to find that the different agents color the experience so much.
