The Thirteenth Floor (fun movie)

Postby Seamus » Tue Nov 16, 2010 8:35 pm

Well, basically it's the Matrix redone into a murder mystery. But there's a conversation, the denouement, where the female lead fills in some blanks for the male lead. The talk is exclusively about "simulations". It gave me a funny feeling of vertigo trying to imagine the iterative possibilities of simulations within simulations. 3.5/5 stars. The acting is so-so, and the plot plods in places, but the concept is pretty brilliant.

It's based upon the 1964 novel Simulacron 3. It was first brought onto the television screen in 1973 by german director Rainer Werner Fassbender in his movie Welt am Draht (World on a Wire). Excellent movie which wasn't made available on DVD until this year in Germany. It's available in the US only via expensive import on DVD or Blu Ray (ranging from 30-45 bucks) from Great Britain (German Audio with English subtitles).

The 13th Floor got a little lost in the big The Matrix shadow but in fact The Matrix ows everything to the story/novel on which The 13th Floor and World on a Wire is based upon.

Funny story: I was looking for a DVD release of World on a Wire for years (it wasn't even released on Videotape) and had given up hope already. Fassbender is a famous german director but that movie is one of his lesser talked about ones. One day I was in the DVD section of our store where I once worked (it's a big furniture store with a multimedia shop integrated) and the guy working there started talking to me (unususal - mostly it's the other way around). He was sorting new releases into the stands and stopped while he was talking with me. And while he talks to me I realize the next DVD he is going to sort in and waving in front of me the whole time is actually World on a Wire. So I grabbed it directly out of his hands ;)

And both ows everything to the 'whole'.

The title is: Welt am Draht. It's german. I have it, german audio and english subtitles. It's in the avi format and is 1,4gb large. I haven't seen it yet. PM me your mail if you would like a link.

Sorry Seamus ... even the DVD and Blu Ray they released in Great Britain has only german language with english subtitles.

They just translated the german title of the movie.

that's fine. i can fly with subs. I like the movie Amelie, for example. It's not just that Audrey Tautou is so hot she makes my solar plexus hurt. or is it?
